DYNAMIC RESPONSE AND STABILITY ANALYSES OF AKOSOMBO DAM USING NUMERICAL ANALYSIS

Dams are very important in Ghanas economic development and environmental improvement. Although Ghana dams seismically far from the active zone, accurately analysed should be evaluated since failure could severely impact people flood environment regions economy on a large scale. This paper proposes numerical procedure for static, slope stability, dynamic analysis of Akosombo embankment dam. Nineteen horizontal acceleration time histories recorded data was used based Maximum Design Earthquake (MDE), Credible (MCE), Basis (DBE) Operating (OBE) data. The results estimated showed that dam is likely to experience moderate deformations during different design earthquakes. result also indicated non-linear capable capturing dominant mechanisms assess stability dams. factor safety (FS) calculated greater than 1.5 high reservoir, rapid drawdown condition low reservoir whereas, FS values were found 1.42 slow condition.
